Membership Requirements for HPHS Honor Societies

National Art Honor Society

Students invited to join the National Honor Society promise to affirm and uphold the keystone values of the Society: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. If a member’s cumulative GPA drops below 3.60, if he or she has a serious disciplinary offense, or if he or she fails to perform the service duties associated with NAHS membership, then the student’s membership may be forfeited.

References from three current teachers from core academic classes are also required.

National English Honor Society (HPHS Highlander Literary Society)

Beginning with second semester sophomores, students must be enrolled at Highland Park High School for at least one year and have completed at least one semester of English to be considered for membership.

Cumulative GPA in English classes must be at least a 3.8 based on the EIC (Local) grading policy as published in the Academic Planning Guide and Kiltie.
A writing sample of 250-300 words is also required. The writing sample needs to be proofread and free of mechanical and grammatical errors which will negatively affect your application.

National Forensic League Honor Society

For information about membership in this honor society, please visit the National Forensic League website.

HPHS students must earn 25 public speaking points to be considered for membership.

National French Honor Society (Société Honoraire de Français)

GPA of 3.6 in French is necessary to qualify.

In addition, applicants are required to submit a poem or a short story in French OR a photo or a drawing that depicts a francophone scene.  This submission must be the student’s own creation.

Also required is an essay in the student’s own handwriting stating in French the student’s reasons for applying for membership in HPHS/SHF.  One of the goals should be that the student wishes to continue the study of French in order to be fluent some day.

Please see the HPHS Société Honoraire de Français webpage.

National Honor Society

Membership in the National Honor Society is only by INVITATION from the faculty, as represented by the Faculty Advisory Committee.

Completion of the application form, or meeting the minimum scholastic requirements alone, does not guarantee your selection.

Students should not submit an application form unless they meet the following requirements:

Scholastic Requirements:
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.60 at end of the previous semester immediately preceding the application process.
  • Enrolled in at least 4 credit bearing courses during the semester of application.

Service Requirements:
  • Completion of (and already registered) at least 30 of the service hours required for HPHS graduation.
The NHS also evaluates each potential member in the areas of:
  • Character (consensus of the faculty and staff regarding the student’s general attitude and behavior in and out of the classroom)
  • Leadership (positions of leadership and leadership behavior in the classroom as well as in various school organizations and sports)
  • Service (a commitment to leadership as shown through service to the community and school)
The faculty and staff may recommend against induction for a student’s failure to uphold these key values of the society.  It is expected that NHS inductees will have exhibited exemplary behavior at HPHS.  Serious disciplinary offenses (including those resulting in ISS or AEP placement), Honor Council offenses, offenses within the community (example: MIP, etc.), preclude a student’s being inducted.

It is also expected that inductees be able to give evidence of service to the school and the community (with the emphasis on school service), and that they demonstrate character and positive leadership in the groups, organizations, teams, classrooms, etc., of which they have been a part.

Please see the HPHS NHS webpage.

National Latin Honor Society

Sophomores and juniors must have a GPA of 3.6 in Latin to qualify.

Also required is an essay in the student’s own handwriting stating the student’s reasons for applying for membership in NLHS.  One of the goals should be that the student wishes to continue his or her study of Latin in order to develop the ability to read authentic Latin Literature.

NLHS members are expected:
  • Be in good standing at National, State, and Local levels of Junior Classical League (pay annual dues);
  • Be an active member of Latin club, attending Area competition in February (or organizing a 3-hour service project before Spring Break); and
  • Maintain honorable standards in both academic and conduct performance.
